Bhagavad-gita – Sruti or Smrti

Question

In ISKCON we say our main book is the Bhagavad-gita, but I’ve heard that the Bhagavad-gita is smrti (remembered) and the Vedas are sruti (heard). So my question is: is the Bhagavad-gita sruti or smrti?

Answer

Vedic culture has always recognized the Bhagavad-gita as a work that transcends its genre. Therefore, all acharyas include it as one of the three most authoritative sources of Vedanta knowledge:

  1. Upanisads
  2. Brahma-sutras
  3. Bhagavad-gita

Krishna Himself states that the Gita is the highest knowledge, and Krishna is the highest authority.
