When we perform an activity repeatedly, two things happen: we develop a skill and we can do it without paying attention. That is the double-edged sword of sadhana-bhakti. Regarding ISKCON as Hindu, keep in mind that ‘Hinduism’ is a very diverse, loose collection of traditions that were historically separate. “Hinduism Today” is run by fanatical Shaivas who resent that ISKCON stole their thunder and became the most prominent “Hindu” group in the West. Hinduism Today does not speak for Hinduism. Not at all.

Devotees are excluded from some temples, but honored in most Hindu temples. In Tirupati, faithful Hindus wait many hours in line to get a few seconds darshana of the Deity. But ISKCON preachers are rushed to the front of the line and allowed to stay as long as they like. So overall, we are more honored than shunned. And that is why many devotees find it so seductive to go with the Hindu flow and live a life of honor and privilege, rather than seriously approaching the West and living a life of mostly marginal status. #HDGoswami #HDG

Sights HDG captured during his japa walk around his home 📸 “The first line of Gayatri — om bhur etc — comes from the Rg Veda and the word ‘pracodayāt’ can be explained as follows.
1. The word ‘pracodayāt’ comes from the verbal root ‘cud’ — ’to impel, incite, animate’, and the prefix ‘pra’ which can mean ‘very much, fully, in a high degree’ etc.
2. Thus the root with prefix -- pra-cud — means “to set in motion, drive on, urge, impel.’ It also means: ’to excite, inspire, etc.
3. The specific verb pracodayāt is a form of Vedic Sanskrit, a type of injunctive tense, no longer used much in classical Sanskrit (Gita, Bhagavatam, Maha-bharata etc)
CONCLUSION: the standard translation is more or less correct: “May the guru inspire, motivate, energize etc” #HDGoswami #HDG

Lord Krishna states in Bg 3.33 that we all act in this world according to our nature, and this is true even for a wise person (jñānavān api). However a good devotee never identifies with that bodily or mental nature, but rather with the pure soul, who is an eternal servant of Krishna.
Varnashrama cannot be imposed, especially because it is based on an agrarian society that was blown up by the industrial revolution. So for example, one may be a teacher by nature, but in this age, one has to find employment to teach, and employment is for sudras. One cannot simply teach freely, and expect that the surrounding community will give proper charity to a brahmana. That is exactly why Prabhupada began stressing the varna system when he began the ‘back to the farm’ movement in ISKCON in 1974.
It’s true that our inner, real nature is simply to serve Krishna. And as long as we have material bodies, inevitably (Bg 3.33) we will all gravitate toward a specific service that fits our nature within the varnashrama framework. Varnashrama cannot become an instrument of bodily identity, oppression, and as we see nowadays, of a crude, mundane male chauvanism preached by some “renouncers” in the name of varnashrama. It is awful to see so-called advanced sannyasis who are clearly obsessed with lording it over women in the name of varnashrama and “chastity." That is obviously a sign of their attachment and aversion. #HDGoswami #HDG

First, it is very dangerous to use sacred and administrative authority to coerce people into a marriage that may not make sense to them. It works better in India where there are strongly shared values and culture within regional and ethnic communities. However in the modern world, especially the West, there is certainly not a sufficient cultural consensus, or even a sufficiently detailed spiritual consensus, to sustain a relationship between two people that have different views on significant issues. In the modern world, many devotees don’t even know what their views are on some relevant issues until they are thrown into the crucible of marriage...The best hope of a lasting marriage is when the couple themselves want to share their life with each other, and also mature, sane elders support the match. If either one of those two is missing, the marriage has less chance of working, based on my real-world experience. #HDGoswami #HDG
